Chapter 5 Space: Gustave Caillebotte

Gustave Caillebotte was one of the lesser known art impressionists whose personal works were forgotten about until recently. GustaveCaillebotte was all together a recognized painter and a generous patron of the Impressionist movement. He was born in 1848, in a very rich family which made its fortune in textiles industry.Engineer by profession, but also former student of the Fine Arts School of Paris Gustave Caillebotte studied with Léon Bonnat, he met with other impressionists such as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Pierre Auguste Renoir in 1874 and helped them organize their first group exhibition in Paris this same year. In Gustave Caillebotte`s artwork, he uses the complex illusion of real space that visually looks real. He also expresses  the different vanishing points in his artwork by organizing a complex array of parallel line impliying movement. Gustave Caillebotte`s  great concern for a realistic painting, his colored notes, and his treatment of light make him well a great Impressionist painter whose work is original and diverse. He illustrates actuality by relating the real world into his artwork. What I think is most interesting about Gustave Caillebotte`s painting, is that the few people that are in the painting does not represent how small the crowd is, but how spacious everyone is, and the rain is not coming down but everyone has umbrellas.

Chapter 4: Vincent van Gogh

In Vincent Van Gogh`s artwork, he demonstrates several different types of line, such as, straight lines, curvy lines, wide and narorow lines. In 1873, Vincent  was sent to the London branch and fell unsuccessfully in love with the daughter of the landlady. This was the first of several disastrous attempts to find happiness with a woman, and his unrequited passion affected him so badly that he was dismissed from his job. Over time, Vincent Van Gogh produced more than 900 paintings and over 1100 drawings during a period of only 10 years, before he succumbed to mental illness, possibly bipolar disorder, Vincent Vang Gogh committed suicide. Alot of his paintings were highly expressive, painted in dark color representing his emotions. His artwork also reproducted visual appearances and light. He used colors such as orange and yellow to symbolize light in his paintings. One of my favorites, as well as Gogh`s favorite paintings is "The Potato Eaters". The painting was made in 1885, and was his first attempt to produce a masterwork which would establish his reputation. Having barely mastered the art of painting, the task he set himself was way beyond his reach. Portraying five figures and making them look natural is almost impossible for an unpracticed hand or new beginner. Vincent van Gogh achieved the effects of light by casting an oil lamp, which made the project even more difficult. His use of color was no less ambitious, for he wanted to make the gloomy interior as brightly as possible. Van Gogh uses a variety of expressions, through line, light, space, and emotions.

Time And Line

From the viewing the video, I believe that Andy Goldsworthy has a passion for art because he makes art that will be destroyed. In the winter time, I enjoy making snowmans. The excitement of creating something isjust as great as if one was to create something and frame it. Andy Goldsworthy uses the photograph as a form of documentation to capture the essence of his work, in which he can still go back and watch and use his own criticism for improvement in his artwork. He is an environmental sculptor in which his use of the natural surroundings create an art form. He also explores and experiments with various natural material such as leaves, grasses, stones, wood, sand, clay, ice, and snow. The seasons and weather determine the materials and the subject matter of his projects. So basically, he relies on nature to give him an idea and tools to create a new form of artwork using creativity. Andy Goldsworthy says that"each work grows, stays, decays- integral parts of a cycle which the photograph shows at its height, marking the moment when the work is most alive. There is an intensity about a work at its peak that I hope is expressed in the image. Process and decay are implicit."Andy Goldsworthy was born in 1956 in Chesire. He studied at Bradford Art College and Preston Polytechnic. After that,he toured the world and experimented with the world's different climates and different geographical materials available. In 1986, he moved to Dumfriesshire, Scotland where he maintains his residency. His favorite season is the winter time. Goldsworthy's artwork reinforces the relationship of human existence within nature. His work shows that we as humans have some ability of controlling nature, but eventually, in the end, nature controls us.

The Gates: Central Park

 What i like the most about the Gates project, is how two different cultures can understand the value of the same artwork in a totally different way. The Gates was founded in 1980 by a group of dedicated civic and philanthropic leaders. This foundation made a wonderful spot to attend on vacation. The park is eight hundred and forty three acres wide. On February 12,2005, seven thousand, five hundred and three saffron-colored fabric panels were dropped from the top of seven thousand, five hundred and three saffron-painted gates, each sixteen feet tal, to billow wind about seven feet above the ground. The gates were positioned twelve feet apart, and were various lengths and widths. The Gates is located in New York City, NY and was the creation of Christo and Jeanne-Claud, the husband and wife team that has wrapped buildings around the world for the last forty years. The Gates was only temporary work, up for a few weeks and then dismantled, leaving abosolutely no traces of their presence behind. The total cosdt of the project was twenty-one million dollars, all financed by the artists. I admire how that for many people, The Gates project represented the rejuvenation of the city after the tragedy of 9/11, a festive celebration of life.

Artist: Trenton Doyle

My Impressions and Commentary on the Work of Artist Trenton Doyle Hancock

     The works of artist, Trenton Doyle Hancock are especially interesting and most impressive to me. This African American artist paints from a very unique perspective. Trenton Doyle Hancock was born in the year of 1974 in Oklahoma City,Oklahoma. Raised in Paris, Texas, Hancock earned his BFA from Texas A&M University. Trenton`s art is also a contribution to the saga of the Mounds, portraying the birth, life,death, afterlife, and even dream states of the unique half-animal, half-plant creatures. He was also influenced by the history of painting, especially Abstract Expressionism. He also earned his MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

   Trenton admits he was disorganized in many ways and had mounds of objects in his home and in his car. When he adds color to his work, his objects has have striking block and color pattern. His painting tells a story and helps exercised my photographic memory. In Doyle`s drawings, he confirms that the majority of his work is an integrated expression of his spiritual and personal life along with his family experiences. I admire Trenton`s artwork because some of his work using iconongraphic meanings symbolizing the hurtful part of his life. He even created his own character named Topedo Boy whos inspires him in his drawings. Topedo is like a superhero who is strong. The character reminds me of superman but doesnt always arrive at the scene to save the day . Hancock has a shirt with the letter "T" on the front, in which he wears when he does his paintings.
